A 23-year-old woman was killed Wednesday (May 15) after a person hurled a rock through her windshield while she was driving.

Brittany Elizabeth Ferguson was traveling in her 2006 Ford Taurus to meet her sister when the incident took place, the North Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed via ABC News. The rock went through the windshield and fatally struck Ferguson in her head, which caused her vehicle to veer off the road and through a yard before crashing into a porch nearby.

“Bad. It was just horrible,”said homeowner Abigail Rumlet via WRAL. “The house can be replaced or repaired … Just closure. That’s what I want for the family.”

The suspect is still at large and hasn't been publicly identified, however, police are searching for a white Chevrolet S-10 single-cab truck. Witnesses said they saw a man hiding in the bed of the truck and driving back and forth through the area after the incident.

North Carolina State troopers believe the rock was thrown by a car passing in the opposite direction of Ferguson or an individual standing on the side of the road.

“I hope that whoever did this act will come forward. And man up to what’s happened here, because it’s just an awful tragedy,” Rumlet said.
